The Virginia Cannabis Control Authority (CCA) recently launched a survey asking marijuana patients to share their experiences with the state’s medical marijuana program. The goal is to understand what is working well, identify areas that need improvement, and learn how changes to Virginia’s marijuana laws could affect current patients.

Announced on September 30, 2026, the survey gives patients an opportunity to share feedback about accessing medical marijuana, purchasing products, and receiving care. The CCA plans to use these responses to help guide future improvements to the program.

The survey takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete and is open to Virginia medical marijuana patients. Responses are due by October 16, 2026. Below, we’ll explain what the survey covers, why patient feedback matters, and how the results could influence the future of Virginia’s medical marijuana program.

What Is the Virginia Medical Marijuana Patient Survey?

The CCA’s patient satisfaction survey is designed to give state officials a better understanding of the experiences of patients who participate in Virginia’s medical marijuana program. Rather than relying only on information from businesses and other stakeholders, the agency wants to hear directly from patients who participate in the program.

According to the CCA, more than 114,000 unique Virginia patients purchased medical marijuana from licensed dispensaries in 2025. Their experiences can help officials understand whether the program is meeting patient needs and where changes could improve access, affordability, and overall satisfaction.

The survey asks about several parts of the patient experience, including medical marijuana certifications, product selection, dispensary services, and treatment costs. It also explores patients’ opinions about the future of Virginia’s marijuana market.

The CCA previously conducted a patient satisfaction survey in 2024. Feedback from that survey led to a recommendation to expand education and training opportunities for healthcare professionals, which the agency has since implemented. The new survey provides another opportunity for patient feedback to influence future program improvements.

How to Participate in the Survey

Virginia medical marijuana patients can access the survey through the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority’s official website. The questionnaire takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

The deadline to submit responses is October 16, 2026. Patients who want to share their experiences should complete the survey before it closes.

What Questions Does the Survey Ask?

The survey covers several topics related to obtaining and using medical marijuana in Virginia. These questions are intended to help the CCA understand the challenges patients face and what they value most about the program.

Medical Marijuana Use and Certifications

Patients are asked about the medical conditions or symptoms they use marijuana to manage, how often they use it, the types of products they purchase, and the process of obtaining a medical marijuana certification.

These questions can help officials better understand how patients enter the program and whether they have access to the information and support they need.

Product Availability and Dispensary Experiences

The survey also explores patients’ experiences at licensed medical marijuana dispensaries. Questions address whether dispensaries offer the products patients want, how knowledgeable dispensary staff are, and whether patients trust the safety of products sold through Virginia’s regulated market.

Other topics include the distance patients travel to reach a dispensary, the availability of delivery services, and the factors that influence purchasing decisions. These factors often include product price, THC potency, strain type, packaging, and staff recommendations.

By collecting this information, the CCA can gain a clearer picture of how convenient and accessible the medical marijuana program is for patients across the state.

Cost and Perceived Benefits

Affordability is another important part of the survey. Patients are asked about how much they typically spend on medical marijuana and whether they consider the cost reasonable.

The survey also asks patients to share their views on how medical marijuana affects their diagnosed conditions or symptoms. Other questions explore whether patients believe medical marijuana has reduced their need for prescription pain medication and whether they would recommend Virginia’s medical marijuana program to a friend or family member.

These responses can help officials better understand patients’ experiences with the program, including its perceived benefits and the financial challenges that may come with ongoing treatment.

How Could Virginia’s Adult-Use Marijuana Market Affect Medical Patients?

One of the survey’s notable features is its focus on Virginia’s planned adult-use marijuana retail market. As the state prepares for the introduction of regulated recreational sales, the CCA wants to understand how these changes could affect those who participate in the medical marijuana program.

Patients are asked what concerns or excites them about the upcoming adult-use market and how they expect their purchasing habits to change once recreational marijuana sales become available.

The survey offers options for patients who expect to continue using only the medical program, those who plan to use both the medical program and adult-use retailers, and those who are unsure.

These questions are important because changes to the retail market could influence how patients access marijuana and decide where to purchase it. Patient feedback can help officials understand what matters most to current cardholders as the state’s market evolves.

Medical marijuana patients may also have questions about how the two markets will differ, including product availability, costs, purchasing rules, and access to medical guidance. The survey gives patients a way to communicate their expectations and concerns directly to state officials.

Why Patient Feedback Matters

Patient feedback can help the CCA identify problems that are not always apparent from program data alone. Information about product availability, travel distances, costs, and dispensary experiences can show officials where patients encounter difficulties.

The survey may also help the agency determine whether patients feel informed about medical marijuana products and their potential effects. Access to clear information is especially important for patients who are new to the program or who need help understanding product types, THC potency, and possible side effects.

The results could help shape future educational resources, program improvements, and discussions about how Virginia’s medical marijuana system should operate alongside the adult-use market.

For patients, participating in the survey is an opportunity to share their experiences and help inform decisions that could affect the program in the years ahead.

Getting Help With Virginia’s Medical Marijuana Program

Patients who have questions about obtaining or renewing a medical marijuana certification can also seek guidance from a qualified marijuana doctor. A marijuana doctor can review a patient’s medical history, discuss their condition, and determine whether they qualify for a medical marijuana certification under Virginia law.

At Virginia Marijuana Card, we help eligible Virginia residents navigate the certification process through convenient telemedicine evaluations. Once certified, patients can access medical marijuana dispensaries the same day. Certifications must be renewed annually to maintain access to the state's medical marijuana program, and we make it easy for patients to complete their renewals and continue their care.

As Virginia’s marijuana laws continue to evolve, staying informed about the medical program and sharing feedback with state officials can help patients make informed decisions about their care.
