Starting July 1st, 2021, Employers Will Not Be Able to Discriminate Against Medical Marijuana Patients
Virginia medical marijuana patients suffering from a long list of conditions that qualify for treatment with cannabis can finally breathe a sigh of relief about their employment status. On March 29th, 2021, Governor Northam signed HB1862 into law, protecting employees in the state of Virginia who have a Virginia marijuana card from discrimination in the workplace.

Starting on July 1, 2021, employers will no longer be allowed to discriminate against employees who use medical marijuana when they are off the clock. This means that you can rest easy about getting the relief you deserve.
Your employer will not be able to impose sanctions, discharge, or otherwise discriminate, against you, as long as you have a state-approved marijuana card and use your cannabis products in accordance with state law.
The exception to this rule is for employers who operate within certain safety sectors, and those who may lose a Federal contract as a result of employee cannabis use.
