For veterans in Virginia considering medical marijuana, one concern often comes before everything else: Could using marijuana put their VA benefits at risk?

Whether you're receiving VA disability compensation, accessing healthcare through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), or managing a service-connected condition, understanding how medical marijuana fits into federal and Virginia law is important.

The good news is that the VA explicitly states veterans will not be denied VA benefits simply because they use marijuana. However, there are important restrictions involving VA doctors, medical marijuana certifications, and where marijuana can legally be used.

Here's what Virginia veterans need to know.

Will Using Medical Marijuana Affect VA Benefits in Virginia?

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, veterans will not be denied VA benefits because of marijuana use.

The VA also confirms that participation in a state-approved medical marijuana program does not affect eligibility for VA healthcare and services.

This means that a Virginia veteran who obtains a medical marijuana certification does not automatically lose access to VA healthcare or disability compensation simply for participating in the state's program.

However, VA policy does not override every federal law or military-related restriction. Active-duty service members and veterans subject to specific employment, security clearance, or other federal requirements may face additional considerations.

What Does the VA Actually Say About Medical Marijuana?

The VA's official policy, outlined in VHA Directive 1315, establishes several important guidelines.

Veterans can discuss marijuana use with their VA doctors. The VA encourages patients to be open about marijuana use, so their healthcare providers can make informed treatment decisions.

VA doctors cannot recommend medical marijuana or complete state certification paperwork. Veterans interested in Virginia's medical marijuana program must obtain a written certification from a licensed medical marijuana doctor outside the VA system.

The VA will not pay for medical marijuana. Cannabis products are not covered by VA healthcare benefits, and VA pharmacies cannot dispense them.

Marijuana cannot be possessed or used on VA property. Even though Virginia permits medical marijuana, federal restrictions apply at VA hospitals, clinics, and other VA facilities.

Veterans can review the VA's official guidance at https://www.publichealth.va.gov/marijuana.asp.

Can Virginia Veterans Get Medical Marijuana for PTSD or Chronic Pain?

Virginia's medical marijuana program allows licensed medical marijuana doctors to certify patients who have a condition or disease that may benefit from marijuana treatment.

Unlike states with a limited list of qualifying diagnoses, Virginia gives authorized marijuana doctors discretion to determine whether a patient's condition may benefit from medical marijuana. Meaning in Virginia, any symptom or condition may qualify for medical marijuana with a marijuana doctor’s approval!

Veterans may seek an evaluation for conditions such as:

A diagnosis does not automatically guarantee certification, and research on marijuana for PTSD and other conditions remains mixed. Patients should discuss potential benefits, risks, and medication interactions with their healthcare providers.

How Can Veterans Get a Medical Marijuana Certification in Virginia?

Getting your marijuana card is a simple process. The first step is scheduling an appointment with a licensed Virginia medical marijuana doctor - that’s where we come in!

During your evaluation, a marijuana doctor will review your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals to determine whether medical marijuana may be appropriate for your situation.

If approved, your marijuana doctor will upload your certification to the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority (CCA) patient portal, where you can digitally download or print your certification and access it whenever needed. Once your certification is available, usually on the same day as your appointment, you can visit any licensed Virginia dispensary and purchase medical marijuana products. Be sure to bring your certification, either digitally or printed, along with a valid government-issued photo ID when visiting a dispensary. We also offer plastic medical marijuana cards for patients who prefer to have a physical card to carry with them.

At Virginia Marijuana Card, we make the process fast and convenient with secure telemedicine appointments. That means you can receive your certification without ever needing to leave home and access dispensaries on the same day, making getting a medical marijuana card easier than ever!

Should Veterans Tell Their VA Doctor They Use Cannabis?

Yes. The VA encourages veterans to discuss marijuana use with their healthcare providers.

This is especially important for veterans taking medications for PTSD, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or sleep disorders. Marijuana can cause side effects and interact with certain medications.

The VA may document cannabis use in a veteran's medical record, just as it records other relevant health information. These records are subject to applicable patient privacy and confidentiality protections.

Discussing marijuana use with a VA provider does not, by itself, mean a veteran will lose VA benefits.

Medical vs. Recreational Marijuana in Virginia: Why a Medical Certification Matters

Virginia allows adults 21 and older to possess marijuana within state-law limits, but recreational possession does not provide the same access to licensed medical dispensaries as the state's medical marijuana program. Adults who want to purchase medical marijuana from a licensed dispensary must obtain a valid written certification from a qualified marijuana doctor.

A medical certification confirms that a marijuana doctor has determined a patient's condition or disease may benefit from medical marijuana. It allows eligible patients to access medical products through Virginia's licensed dispensaries and receive guidance as part of their care. Unlike recreational possession, medical access requires this additional step.

For veterans, it's also important to understand that a Virginia medical marijuana certification does not override federal rules. The VA cannot issue medical marijuana certifications, cover marijuana purchases, or permit marijuana possession on VA property. Veterans can discuss marijuana use with their VA healthcare providers without losing VA benefits.

Virginia Veterans Can Explore Medical Marijuana Without Automatically Losing VA Benefits

Veterans deserve clear information about their healthcare options. While the VA cannot recommend or provide medical marijuana, its official policy makes clear that marijuana use alone does not disqualify veterans from VA benefits.

For Virginia veterans interested in medical marijuana for PTSD, chronic pain, or another condition, the next step is speaking with an authorized medical marijuana doctor.

Virginia Marijuana Card can help eligible veterans learn about the certification process and connect with a qualified medical marijuana doctor.
