Shenandoah Valley’s First Medical Marijuana Dispensary Is Coming

For years, medical marijuana patients in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley have had to travel outside the region to visit a licensed dispensary; that is about to change. A new medical marijuana dispensary, Ayr Cannabis Dispensary, in Winchester is set to become the first dispensary serving patients in the Shenandoah Valley and the broader Health Service Area 1 (HSA 1).

AYR Virginia, the pharmaceutical processor selected to serve Health Service Area 1, is opening a new medical marijuana dispensary in Frederick County, bringing the first licensed dispensary to the Shenandoah Valley. The dispensary is located at 260 Shady Elm Road in Frederick County, near Winchester, and opened on Wednesday, August 19th.

For patients who live in Winchester, Frederick County, and surrounding parts of the Shenandoah Valley, the new location makes accessing medical marijuana much more convenient.

Shenandoah Valley Patients Have Faced Limited Access

Virginia has had a medical marijuana program for several years, but access has not been equal across the state. While patients in many areas have had licensed dispensaries nearby, HSA 1 went without a licensed medical marijuana dispensary until now.

HSA 1 covers a large portion of Virginia, including the Shenandoah Valley and areas around Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, and Harrisonburg. The region includes 32 counties and cities, making the opening of a local dispensary an important development for patients who previously had to travel to another part of the state to purchase their medical marijuana.

Patients in HSA 1 will now have the opportunity to purchase medical marijuana without making a long trip to another region. The new dispensary is located close to major roads, including I-81, Route 37, and Route 11, providing convenient access for patients in the Winchester area.

What Will Be Available at the New Dispensary?

According to Virginia Business, a business news publication covering companies, industries, and economic developments across the state, the initial menu includes brands such as Old Pal, Edie Parker, and Triple Seven. Ayr Cannabis Dispensary also plans to introduce its own Later Days brand in October, while additional products are expected to become available in the following months.

The dispensary operates from a facility that is approximately 10,000 square feet, with a sales floor of about 1,000 square feet. The new dispensary gives medical marijuana patients in Winchester, Frederick County, and surrounding Shenandoah Valley communities a closer option for purchasing their medicine. For patients who previously had to travel outside the area to visit a dispensary, having a licensed location in Frederick County can make access more convenient.

Do You Need a Medical Marijuana Card to Visit the Dispensary?

Yes. While Virginia law allows adults 21 and older to possess limited amounts of marijuana, recreational marijuana sales are not currently available through licensed retail stores.
