Different Ingestion Methods for Smoking Cannabis

Bailey Porras

One of the most popular ways for Virginians to ingest their marijuana has proven to be smoking. And when narrowing it down to smoking flower, there are many different ways to effectively smoke it!

Whether you are a seasoned cannabis veteran or new to the program, you can use this article as a guide to the different ways of utilizing your marijuana flower.

Joints, Blunts, and Spliffs, Oh My!

The difference between these three marijuana ingestion methods really comes down to how much cannabis and tobacco is in each one and what material was used to roll them.

Joints and spliffs are usually rolled with rolling papers. A joint is filled with 100% weed and a spliff is filled with both weed and tobacco.

Blunts are rolled using wraps which are made from tobacco. The filling of the blunt does not usually contain tobacco but just cannabis.

If you aren’t into tobacco, a joint is probably going to be the best method for you. It really just depends on your tobacco preference.

Bongs

Bongs are extremely popular among veteran pot smokers for many reasons. Here are some of them:

  • They produce a smoother hit, because the smoke cools down in water before making it into your throat

  • They provide better filtration due to the use of water

  • They reduce bacteria and mold

  • They allow for much bigger hits

  • They are fun to use!

Bongs come in many different shapes and sizes, and their use of water makes a huge difference for your lungs and throat.

There are also gravity bongs and beakers, if you want a piece that will start some conversation.

Bubblers and Pipes

A bubbler is basically a mix between a bong and a pipe. You use water with bubblers the same way you would with a bong, which makes the process of smoking weed much easier on your lungs and throat.

Bubblers are also much smaller and more easily concealable, which makes them easier to travel with. However, they are a bit more elaborate than bongs and pipes, so they can be harder to clean–which, by the way, you should do often with any smoking device to ensure clean hits and limited lung and throat damage.

Glass pipes are easy to use and very portable, sometimes even smaller than a bubbler, and you don’t have to deal with adding water. You just load your herb into the bowl-end of the pipe, plug the carb (small hole) with your finger, light up, inhale, and lift your finger to release all the smoke.

Pipes are harder on your lungs and throat, because there is no water to take some of the harshness out of the smoking process.
