The Real Story Behind 4/20
So where did 4/20 come from? Believe it or not, it started with a group of California high schoolers in the early 1970s. Known as “The Waldos,” these teens at San Rafael High School used 4:20 p.m. as their secret time to meet up and smoke.
The code “420” stuck, and it spread. One of the Waldos ended up working with the Grateful Dead, and the term caught on with the band’s fanbase. In the early ‘90s, a High Times writer published a flyer inviting people to “meet at 4:20 on 4/20,” and the phrase officially went mainstream.
