Sativa vs Indica — What’s the Difference?

Throughout Virginia, deserving patients are now enjoying the many benefits of cannabis for their qualifying condition. Although the state’s medical marijuana program has been in place for some time now, the lingo, terms, and slang can be very confusing for anyone at any age. Keeping track of strains, dosages, and delivery methods can be extremely difficult.

Among the most basic things you should become knowledgeable about when it comes to cannabis is the strain you like best.

Sativa vs Indica

You may already know the most widely accepted difference between the two: sativa wakes you up and indica helps you relax. But you may not know that there are many more differences between the two?

Type of “High”

Sativas are said to create a “head high”, which can help you focus and is known to reduce anxiety and stress.

When you smoke sativa, you may find a lot of things funny or find yourself in a laughing fit. Sativas can make you feel the need to talk more and have a deep conversation about a controversial topic, for example.

Head highs can boost creativity as well as energy levels, allowing you to focus and direct all your thoughts to the task at hand. They are also better for social interaction and may cause you to venture out more than you normally would at a gathering.

On the flip side, indicas are known to produce more of a “body high.”

Body highs can make you very tired or feel relaxed. Indica strains are known to reduce insomnia, affecting both the quality and the duration of your sleep.

Body highs can cause pain in your body to subside, so indica strains can make your muscles relax and expel the tension you live with.

Indica is best for a relaxing night at home, or if you are trying to fall asleep so you can be well-rested for tomorrow’s activities.

So, Which One Do I Need?

The type of strain that is best for you will depend on a variety of things. For example:

1. What time of day it is

If it’s night time, indica may be best so you aren’t kept awake by an unwanted head high. But if it’s the middle of the day, you don’t want to be drowsy. Sativa can help!

2. What effect you are hoping for

If you are trying to limit the amount of pain you feel in your muscles, indica may be best. However, if you want to reduce your anxiety and stress during the day but stay wide awake, sativa will be the best option.

There are many factors that determine the best strain for you. Our advice would be to try both separately. If you vape, you can get an indica and a sativa cartridge. Or, simply…get a hybrid.

What Is a Hybrid?

So we’ve covered both sativa and indica strains, but now we have to mention hybrids! Hybrids are a combination of both of these strains.

Some hybrids are 50/50 indica and sativa, while others are dominant. For example, if you have a sativa-dominant hybrid, there is a bit more sativa in the product than there is indica, and vice versa.

If you prefer one strain but you want some of the effects of both, a hybrid would be a great option for you. For example, if you don’t want to get tired, but you want a body high so your muscle pain subsides, try a sativa-dominant hybrid strain.

Some of the most popular hybrids include Pineapple Express, Trainwreck, and Blue Dream. Visit your nearest dispensary to give a hybrid a try!

Which Is Right for You?

You will never truly know which strain is best for you until you try. That applies to cannabis more generally as well. You should consider trying sativa and indica strains, as well as hybrids to ensure you find the best possible option for you.

There is no way to know which strain works best for you until you have tried them all, so get busy! Of course, you will need your Virginia marijuana card to shop at a licensed dispensary.
